|
The Rose Bowl Stadium is located in the city of Pasadena, 13 miles northeast of Downtown Los Angeles. Located in an old river gorge called the Arroyo Seco, the Rose Bowl Stadium is situated on two, 18-hole golf courses with a backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains.
Construction of the Rose Bowl Stadium began in 1921. First built in a horseshoe configuration with a seating capacity of 57,000, the stadium was given the name "Rose Bowl" by police reporter Harlan W. Hall, who had the Yale Bowl in mind when thinking of how an expanded stadium might look.
The Rose Bowl Stadium has been the home of the Rose Bowl Game since it was built in 1923. The first game held at the stadium featured USC vs. Penn State on January 1, 1923. Since then, the stadium has hosted 28 college football national champions as well as five Super Bowls (XI, XIV, XVII, XXI, XXVII). In addition, the stadium was the soccer venue for the 1984 Olympics, and the site for the finals and closing ceremony for the 1994 Men’s World Cup and 1999 Women’s World Cup. On January 7, 2010, the Rose Bowl Stadium was the hosting site of the Citi BCS National Championship Game.
Additional information about the Rose Bowl Stadium may be found on their website.
