Who is the BCS and what is their role in the NCG?
BCS stands for Bowl Championship Series. The BCS is the group of 11 conferences (plus Notre Dame) and four bowl organizations that conduct the five largest post season college bowl games. Each year, one of these BCS games is also the site of the national championship game (NCG) for the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division 1) of college football.  Back to top

When is the NCG?
The NCG is conducted at the end of first week in January. In 2010, it will be held on Thursday, January 7th.  Back to top

Who is managing the NCG?
Each year, the NCG is managed by one of the four major BCS bowl organizations: the Fiesta Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Orange Bowl or the Tournament of Roses. The system for hosting the NCG is called “double hosting,” because the bowl organization in the rotation that year will host its main bowl game on January 1 and a second game (the NCG) about a week later.  Back to top

Is the NCG another Rose Bowl Game?
No. The NCG will be managed by the Tournament of Roses; however, the governing bodies and the contractual arrangements under which the game will be managed are different. A Rose Bowl Game is conducted under the auspices of an agreement between the Tournament of Roses, the Pac-10 Conference and the Big Ten Conference. The NCG will be managed under the rules developed by the BCS.  Back to top

Will ABC broadcast the NCG?
Yes, in 2010, the NCG will be broadcast by ESPN on ABC  Back to top

Who is the title sponsor for the NCG?
Citi, which is also the presenting sponsor of the Rose Bowl Game, will be the title sponsor for the 2010 NCG  Back to top

What is the official name of the NCG?
The title of the game will be the 2010 Citi BCS National Championship Game  Back to top

How are the teams going to be picked for the NCG?
The teams selected for the NCG will be the teams rated No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS standings of the year. The standings are released the day after all the major conference championship games are completed, normally the first week in December  Back to top

How are the two top ranked teams determined?
The two top ranked teams are determined on the basis of a three-part formula that has been developed by the BCS. One third is from the American Football Coaches Association Poll, the second is the Harris Interactive Poll, and the third is an average score from a number of selected computer ranking systems. The three parts of the equation are calculated and publicly reported by the National Football Foundation on behalf of the BCS. (See http://www.bcsfootball.org/bcsfootball/ for additional details.)  Back to top

When will we know which teams are playing in the Rose Bowl Game and NCG?
Selection Sunday will be December 6, 2009  Back to top

Will the 2010 NCG game have the big entertainment features like some of the other bowls?
Each hosting bowl is allowed to schedule its own pre-game and half time show in accordance with the normal entertainment philosophy of the individual bowl. All shows must be approved by the BCS. The Tournament of Roses will conduct a traditional pre-game and half time show as is the Rose Bowl Game tradition. There will likely be a live performer for the National Anthem before the game as has been the practice in prior championship games  Back to top

Why are the NCG teams staying in Orange County?
In order to avoid transition issues among teams participating in the Rose Bowl and the NCG, the Tournament of Roses has elected to use two different sets of hotels and practice facilities. An extensive search was conducted to find two very similar hotels with the specialized accommodations needed to host a large NCG team. It was determined that the best combination of hotels, practice sites, and activities for the team was found in the Orange County area  Back to top

When will the NCG teams arrive?
The teams will officially arrive no later than noon on January 2, 2010. It is possible, however, that teams may choose to unofficially arrive prior to this date  Back to top

Will the Grand Marshal and Queen & Court participate in the NCG?
No. The Grand Marshal and the Queen and Court will participate in all the activities of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game. But since the NCG is not technically a Tournament of Roses event, it is not anticipated that there will be official participation by the GM or the Q&C in the NCG  Back to top

Will I be able to get NCG merchandise on the Tournament of Roses website?
We are working now to secure the rights to sell BCS merchandise on the Tournament of Roses website. More information will be made available as we get closer to 2010  Back to top

How will you get the stadium and field ready for a second game?
With the exception of the field, infrastructure for the NCG will be in place at the Stadium prior to the Rose Bowl Game. This will allow for the minimum amount of changeover in the week between the two games.

The Rose Bowl Game staff and the Rose Bowl Stadium take special pride in having the finest field of any of the bowl games. Current plans call for the field to be re-sodded in early December in preparation for the Rose Bowl Game and then, weather permitting, plans are for a field re-sod between the two games. Should there be inclement weather, Game staff will work with the Rose Bowl Stadium to determine how much of the field will be re-sodded in order to ensure the best possible quality playing surface  Back to top

Economic Impact/Benefits

Does the Rose Bowl Stadium benefit from the NCG?
The Rose Bowl Stadium, which is a City of Pasadena property, benefits from the NCG in two ways. First, it hosts a second major football game with a crowd in excess of 90,000. It is expected that the Stadium will earn approximately $1.5 million for hosting the NCG. Second, the BCS has agreed to allow the Tournament of Roses to maintain an additional $2 million for Rose Bowl Stadium capital improvements  Back to top

Is the NCG going to cost the City money?
No. City expenses will be covered as part of the agreement with the City to allow the Game to be played in Pasadena  Back to top

What will the payout be for the NCG?
It is anticipated that the payout from the NCG will be in excess of $31 million. This will be paid to the BCS and will be distributed in accordance with BCS procedures  Back to top

What is the estimated economic impact for the NCG?
The economic impact will be determined by a variety of factors including the teams playing in the game, how long the out-of-town fans elect to stay in the Los Angeles area, and how these visitors spend their time and money in LA. Generally, a major bowl game like this will produce an impact of more than $100 million in direct and indirect economic impacts for the metropolitan region in which the game is held  Back to top

Rose Bowl Game/Rose Parade

Who will be in the 2010 Rose Bowl Game?
The Rose Bowl Game will host the champion of the Pac-10 Conference against the champion of the Big Ten conference, unless these champions are rated either No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS standings. If either champion leaves the Rose Bowl Game for the NCG, the Tournament of Roses will be permitted to select a replacement for the departing team. Actual selections will not be made until December 6, 2009  Back to top

Will the Rose Bowl Game have a title sponsor?
No. By agreement with ABC, the Rose Bowl Game has a “presenting sponsor,” not a “title sponsor.” Thus, the name of the sponsor comes after the title of the Bowl. To illustrate, the Rose Bowl Game title is the Rose Bowl Game presented by Citi, rather than FedEx Orange Bowl, which has a title sponsor. However, the BCS National Championship Game, which is not a Rose Bowl Game, will have a title sponsor  Back to top

Will the NCG teams/universities participate in the Rose Parade?
No. The Rose Bowl Game institutions will be the universities that participate in the Rose Parade, not the NCG universities  Back to top

Are we changing the Rose Parade in any way because of the NCG?
No  Back to top

Will there be a parade for the NCG?
No  Back to top
