Past Parade Themes & Summaries

Each year, the new President of the Tournament of Roses has the privilege of selecting a theme for the upcoming festivities. The theme is used to inspire the ideas for the magnificent floral floats that will appear in the Rose Parade.

The theme for the 2012 Rose Parade is Just Imagine.

1890 Rose Parade

First Parade and Games. The members of the Valley Hunt Club voted to stage, on January 1, 1890, a parade of flower-decorated horse-and-buggies and an afternoon of public games on the “town lot” east of Los Robles between Colorado and Santa Fe.

1891 Rose Parade

The Monrovia Town Band becomes the first musical group to perform in the Rose Parade.

1892 Rose Parade

No Theme

Parade almost dubbed “Orange Tournament” when a severe winter storm causes a shortage of roses.

1893 Rose Parade

No Theme

First year for officials to be faced with the dilemma of having a Parade on Sunday, which would interfere with church services. Starting the festival a day later was the easy solution. The “Never On Sunday” tradition continues today.

1894 Rose Parade

First viewing stands are built along the Parade route. First year that organizations enter floats in the Rose Parade. The Columbia Hill Tennis Club, the Valley Hunt Club and Hotel Raymond are among the entrants.

1895 Rose Parade

The Parade had become too big for the Valley Hunt Club to handle alone.

1898 Rose Parade

No Theme

First East Coast media coverage of the Rose Parade. Several large eastern newspapers came west for the Parade for the first time.

1899 Rose Parade

No Theme

A rainstorm delays the start of the Rose Parade to 3:45 p.m. This was the second of nine times that it rained on the Parade. The Parade has never been canceled due to rain. Parade held on Jan. 2 due to the “Never on Sunday” tradition.
