Beef Bowl Food Facts
Lawry’s Beef Bowl is America’s oldest bowl game tradition and has been associated with the Rose Bowl Game for 56 years. The storied event is older than 30 of the 35 bowl games being played this postseason. Only the Rose Bowl Game, and the Orange, Sugar, Cotton and Sun Bowl games have been around longer.
Sporting News Magazine named Lawry’s Beef Bowl “The Best Tradition” of the college football bowl season in its Dec. 23, 2005 issue.
Lawry’s Beef Bowl is a private event – exclusive to each participating Rose Bowl team, Tournament of Roses officials, the Rose Queen and her Court, and accredited Rose Bowl Game media.
More than 19,600 players and coaches have been served since the first Lawry’s Beef Bowl in 1956.
More than 76,800 pounds of roasted prime rib have been enjoyed by Rose Bowl bound players and coaches in the past 55 years.
178 consensus All-Americans have attended Lawry’s Beef Bowl.
14 Heisman Trophy winners have appeared in Lawry’s Beef Bowl.
The USC Trojans have made the most appearances in Lawry’s Beef Bowl history with 21, followed by the Michigan Wolverines with 17 appearances.
Since Lawry’s Beef Bowl began, the Pac-12 has won 30 Rose Bowl Game titles, the Big Ten has won 20 Rose Bowl Game titles, the Big 12 has won three (Oklahoma in 2003 and Texas in 2005 and 2006), and the Big East (Miami, in 2002) and Mountain West (Texas Christian, in 2011) have each won once.
There were four Lawry’s Beef Bowl events for participating teams from the 2009 season. The Ohio State Buckeyes and the University of Oregon Ducks participated in the 54th Lawry’s Beef Bowl prior to their match-up in the 96th Rose Bowl Game. The University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide participated in special Lawry’s Beef Bowl events prior to clashing in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game played in Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.
