TOURNAMENT OF ROSES® FOUNDATION NAMES NEW BOARD MEMBERS

PASADENA, Calif. (July 30, 2014) – Nancy Neal Davis, president of the Tournament of Roses® Foundation, announced the election of Shannon Boalt, Laura Farber, Rick Jackson, Brian James, and Charles Martinson to the Foundation’s board of directors. These new members replace outgoing board members Dave Davis, Ciran Hadjian, Mike Hagedorn, Jacqueline Howard and Lance Tibbet, who provided a combined 17 years of outstanding service and leadership to the Foundation board.

Shannon Boalt has lived in Pasadena since moving from Connecticut in 1976.  A graduate of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Loyola Marymount University, Boalt has spent over twenty years working in the field of development and fundraising for nonprofit organizations. After working in this capacity at Para Los Niños, White Memorial Medical Center Charitable Foundation and El Centro, she opened The Boalt Group, Inc. providing development and fundraising consulting for nonprofits throughout Los Angeles County, including Pasadena.  Boalt and her husband have two children who currently attend Pasadena Christian School. 

Laura V. Farber, a Tournament volunteer since 1993, is also a member of the Tournament of Roses Association’s Executive Committee. She will serve as the Tournament’s President in 2020 providing leadership for the 131st Rose Parade and 106th Rose Bowl Game on January 1, 2020. Throughout her extensive Tournament career, Farber has served on and chaired various committees including Decorating Places, Formation Area, Judging and Membership Development. She was elected to the Executive Committee in 2012. Professionally, Farber is a partner in the Pasadena law firm of Hahn & Hahn, where she practices civil litigation with an emphasis in employment disputes. Additionally, Farber is a member of the American Bar Association, where she serves as a member of the Board of Governors representing the State of California, past chair of the Commission on Youth At Risk, past chair of the Solo Small Firm and General Practice Division, and past chair of the Young Lawyers Division. She has been named one of the top 50 women lawyers in Los Angeles and featured in the Los Angeles Business Journal. In 2003, she received the American Bar Association’s Commission on Ethnic and Racial Diversity in the Profession – Spirit of Excellence Award and, in 2004, the YWCA San Gabriel Valley Women of Excellence in the Law Award. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Farber's native language is Spanish.  Farber and her husband, Tomás Lopez, reside in South Pasadena with their two children, Christopher and Jessica. 

Rick Jackson has been a Tournament volunteer since 1975 and was elected to the Executive Committee in 2004. Jackson served as the Tournament’s President in 2012 presiding over the 123rd Rose Parade and 98th Rose Bowl Game. In addition to Jackson’s service with theTournament of Roses, he is involved with numerous community organizations such as thePasadena Optimist Club, the Swedish Club of Los Angeles, the Pasadena Jaycees and Treasure Little Children Foundation. Professionally, Jackson is a CPA in Pasadena and is a member of The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants as well as the California Society of Certified Public Accountants. Born in Detroit, Mich., Jackson earned his B.S. in Business Administration from Oregon State University. He currently resides in Altadena with his wife Sharon. They have four children and four grandchildren. 

Brian K. James, a native of Altadena, has been a Tournament volunteer since 1993. Currently, he is a member of the Media Relations/Hall of Fame Committee. He has served as an At-Large member of the Tournament’s Executive Committee and Vice Chair of the Equestrian and Formation Area Committees. James has participated in the Rose Parade on numerous occasions as an equestrian with the New Buffalo Soldiers and a musician in the Pasadena High School Band. Professionally, James is a Linked Learning Coordinator for the Los Angeles Unified School District. In addition to volunteering with the Tournament, he is a Board member of the National Football Foundation (San Gabriel Valley Chapter), President of the Canyon Ridge HOA, Co-President of the Marshall Fundamental Athletic Booster Club, LAUSD Vendor Advisory Committee member and past Board member of the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House, Sierra Madre Girls Softball and Pasadena Girls Softball Associations and PUSD GATE task team. James and his wife reside in Altadena and have three children.

Charles Martinson has been a volunteer member of the Tournament since 2004.  He is currently serving on the Coronation, Kickoff and Tailgate Committee. Born and raised in San Marino, Martinson received a bachelor of business administration from the University ofSouthern California, and is currently pursuing an MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Professionally, Martinson is a consulting executive in charge of overseeing Robert Half’s and Protiviti’s computer forensics and electronic discovery practice. In addition to volunteering with the Tournament of Roses, he is active within the National Multiple Scleroses Society (Pacific South Coat Chapter), Susan G. Komen of Los Angeles County and his firm’s Community Service Outreach Committee. 

In addition, the following Tournament of Roses Foundation board members were elected to serve as officers on the board: Katherine Martinez Kleine, vice president; Maxine Harris, treasurer; and Norma Garcia Kachigian, secretary. Members continuing to serve on the Foundation Board are Gerald Freeny, Karen Palmersheim, Jerri Price-Gaines, and Mike Ward.

Established in 1983, the Foundation is a tax exempt, non-profit public benefit corporation established to receive and manage contributions from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, its supporters and the general public. The Foundation supports charities in the Pasadena area by funding sports and recreation, visual and performing arts, and volunteer motivation and leadership development. The thirteen member board of directors is comprised of community leaders and Tournament members, appointed by the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association.
