EACH SOLDIER TRAINS THERE OWN HORSE AS IF THEY WERE IN THE U.S. ARMY. THE HORSES ARE USED IN REENACTMENT BATTLES WHERE THERE IS A LOT OF GUNFIRE FROM OUR WEAPONS AND CANNONS. WE ALSO TRAIN OUR HORSES TO RIDE IN PARADES AND THEY ARE GENTLE SO THE PUBLIC CAN TOUCH THEM AT COWBOY FESTIVAL, KEARNEY PARK IN FRESNO AND EQUESTFEST.

MISSOURI FOXTROTTERS AND TENNESSEE WALKERS ARE KNOWN FOR THEIR SMOOTH RIDE AND LONG ENDURANCE. THEY WERE FIRST BRED FOR PLANTATION OWNERS TO WATCH OVER SLAVES. THEY WERE LATER USED BY PEDDLERS WHO HAD A LONG DAY IN THE SADDLE. FROM A DISTANCE YOU COULD TELL IF THE MAN RIDING WAS WEALTHY OR NOT IF HIS BODY WAS BOUNCING UP AND DOWN IN THE SADDLE HE WOULD USUALLY NOT BE WEALTHY. NATIONAL SHOW HORSES ARE A CROSS BETWEEN AN ARABIAN AND A SADDLEBRED. MUSTANG IS A WILD MIXED BREED HORSE. WHEN THE SPANISH BROUGHT HORSES HERE THEY WERE TURND FREE AND BRED AMONGST THEMSELVES WHICH CREATED THE WILD MUSTANGS.

GROUP DESCRIPTION:
WE ARE A LIVING HISTORICAL EDUCATION ORGANIZATION. THE MEMBERS OF THE NEW BUFFALO SOLDIERS STRIVE TO EDUCATE AND ENLIGHTEN THE WORLD ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE BLACK MEN'S PARTICIPATION ON THE AMERICAN WESTERN FRONTIER. THE GROUP RECREATES THE LIVES OF THE MEN OF CO. H TENTH REGIMENT OF U.S. CAVALRY BETWEEN 1866 THROUGH 1871

THE GROUP WAS FORMED IN JULY OF 1992 BY DR. JOHN MAPP. HE HAD A PASSION TO TEACH HISTORY ABOUT THE BLACK SOLDIER. AS NEW MEMBERS JOINED WE WOULD SHARE THE HISTORY WITH EACH OTHER. AT FIRST WE RENTED HORSES AND LEARNED TO DO MILITARY MANEUVERS, FORMATIONS AND TAUGHT OTHER NON RIDING MEMBERS OF THE GROUP HOW TO RIDE. THEN WE WERE INVITED TO THE GENE AUTRY MUSEUM FOR JUNE TEENTH. FROM THERE WE WERE INVITED TO TEACH AT ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES AS WELL AS LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS.

OUR COSTUMES RANGE FROM 1866-1871. WE WEAR A LIGHT BLUE TROUSER, A DARK BLUE BLOUSE WITH GOLD PIPING.

THE SADDLES ARE A MILITARY SADDLE CALLED A MCCLELLAN. WHICH WAS INTRODUCED BY GENERAL MCCLELLAN. THIS SADDLE IS COMFORTABLE FOR THE HORSE BUT NOT THE RIDER.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
WE PARTICIPATED IN FRESNO AT KEARNEY PARK FOR THEIR EDUCATION AND REENACTMENT PROGRAM. APPROXIMATELY 1500 STUDENTS COME FROM THE SURROUNDING SCHOOLS TO LEARN MANY DIFFERENT PARTS OF HISTORY INCLUDING THE UNION AND CONFEDERATE ARMIES. THEY ALSO LEARNED NOT ONLY HOW THE SOLDIERS LIVED BUT, HOW THE WIVES AND FAMILIES OF THE SOLDIERS LIVED AND PARTICIPATED IN THE WAR. WHILE WE WERE THERE THEY DID A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE ABOUT THE GROUP.

WE HAVE BEEN INVITED TO THE COWBOY FESTIVAL AT MELODY RANCH IN SANTA CLARITA FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS. THERE WE SET UP A STATIC DISPLAY WHICH INCLUDES; TENTS, WEAPONS, TACK AND A LIVE SHOEING DEMONSTRATION. WE ALSO RIDE OTHER PARADES DURING THE YEAR. SOME OF OUR MEMEBERS RODE THE SPANISH DAYS PARADE IN SANTA BARBARA WHICH IS CONSIDERED THE LONGEST EQUESTRIAN PARADE IN THE U.S.

WE ARE A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION AND WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR SPONSORS.

WE ARE WORKING ON GETTING A WAGON AND A TEAM OF HORSES TO PULL IT.

IT IS ENJOYABLE TO MEET THE NEW PARTICIPANTS AT THE ORIENTATION MEETINGS. WE LIKE TO SHARE OUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE PARADE AND EQUESTFEST IN HOPES OF MAKING THEIR EXPERIENCE AND ENJOYABLE ONE.
