Roots of Music uses New Orleans’ musical heritage as a stepping stone to changing lives. They are an organization that helps at-risk kids through music education, tutoring and mentoring—unlocking their potential as individuals, and building a nationally-recognized marching band along the way. Since 2007 they have run New Orleans’ only free, year round music education and academic program. They provide at-risk economically disadvantaged youth ages 9-14 with programming in the areas of music education, academic mentoring, positive behaviors, civic responsibility and life skills. Along the way they have created a nationally-recognized marching band. Currently, there are 140 children enrolled, representing over 40 schools in Orleans Parish. To date, they have served over 500 kids.

Accomplishments include 1st place in the 2012 Warren Easton High School Drum Line Competition, 1st place in the 2012 Sophie B. Wright Band Competition and 1st and 2nd place in the 2012 Mardi Gras Parades. In 2009, founder, Derrick Tabb was named a Top Ten CNN Hero for the work of The Roots of Music. In 2010, The Roots of Music were among the Top Ten Finalist for Energizer Bunny Hall of Fame. In 2011, Derrick Tabb won a Blue Cross Blue Shield Angel Award for outstanding volunteer services on behalf of Louisiana’s Children.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Roots of Music has successfully marched in Mardi Gras parades for the past 4 years, placing first and second against other high school bands—we’re middle schoolers! Our Mardi Gras experience helped us recreate Mardi Gras in the French Quarter last June for the Rose Parade President’s visit which helped us raise $65,250. Another marching group in New Orleans, the 610 Stompers donated $15,000 to our Rose Parade trip from their annual fundraiser, The Uptown Throwdown. Additionally, the City of New Orleans granted $25,000 toward our professional development experience to march in the Rose Parade.
