The rich culture, traditions and heritage of the tropical rainforest regions of Latin America are celebrated by Dole with its floral salute, Dreaming of Paradise, and to the independent family farmers who implement sustainable agricultural practices fulfilling Dole’s commitment to quality, safety, pollution prevention and continuous improvement in environmental protection.

With its warm oceans, florescent oozing magma and cloud draped rainforests, Dole’s floral entry comes radiantly alive with vibrant colors and textures with sun-drenched fruits and tropical flowers to arouse our senses of sight, smell, touch and taste. Nested in the lush backdrop of tropical flowers and foliage two magnificent parrots, perched on lofty branches of orchids, are overwhelming in size. Whimsical monkeys demand attention with their antics as they frolic near magnificent waterfalls cascading down plush moss covered walls accentuating the mist-draped gardens. Exotic animated leopards bask in the beauty of the jungle that claims the lost ruins of past civilizations. Colorful butterflies and dragonflies flutter about. At the rear of the float a 26-foot tall volcano roars to life creating an eruption of 20 foot tall flames, smoke and steam. Sculptured cattleya and cymbidium orchids frame this phenomenal rain forest setting. Featured throughout this floral masterpiece are fresh and healthy fruits, include bananas, pineapples, mangoes, papayas, peaches, strawberries and blueberries that are grown and provided by Dole for use on their float.

“Dreaming of Paradise” follows in the tradition of DOLE’s two Sweepstakes Trophy winning predecessors of showcasing the regions where DOLE employs workers and grows produce.

FLOWERING: This setting furnishes an unequaled opportunity for floral presentation and color. A flash of blue ... a glint of red, the incredible parrots are fashioned in floral feathers of blue iris, red poinsettia, carnations and Pee Wee anthuriums accented with Kermit button mums. The playful monkeys have fur fashioned in dried cranberry foliage with highlights of pampas and pharmitas grass. The colorful butterflies of orange marigold and yellow strawflower petals are detailed with black onion seed and white sweet rice. Shades of bronze and cream strawflower petals and black chive seed create the leopard fur.

Lava of 8,000 vivid florescent orange roses majestically flow over the volcano surface decorated in black lichen moss. More than 25,000 hot pink roses ramble through colorful tropical gardens created from thousands of specialty anthuriums, cypripedium and hybrid vanda orchids. Kimi, Curcuma and Torch ginger, King and Pink Mink protea, along with Angusta, Bihia, Lobster Claw, Pagoda and fuzzy King Kong hanging heliconia. Foliages and ferns are intermixed with bromeliad plants to complete the exotic gardens. Over 10,000 purple dendrobium orchids cascade from the forest canopy of trees. Tropical fruits, include bananas, pineapples, mangoes, papayas, peaches, strawberries and blueberries that are grown and provided by Dole, are featured throughout these floral designs.

Many Dole employee’s, along with their families and friends, have volunteered to help decorate the Dole float.

ANIMATION: A pyrotechnic flame unit has been incorporated into the volcano to created 20-foot tall blasts of real fire, smoke and steam erupting from deep inside the crater. A high pressure water misting system creates “steam” in addition to the non-toxic smoke machine and a high volume, low bass sound system to reproduce the look and sound of a live volcano. A highly sophisticated computerize hydraulic system has been used to achieve the realistic movements on the leopards and butterflies. Three fountain waterfalls, featuring over 1,000 gallons of cascading recycled water, adds to the tropical mood. Traditional Costa Rican folk music is played from an on-board sound system with performers dancing at street level on both sides of the float.

INNOVATION: A sophisticated hydraulic system has been incorporated into the design to lower the 26-foot tall float to 16-feet in height in less than 45 seconds allowing the float to pass under low wires and the freeway bridge along the parade route.

FLOAT RIDERS: Sophie Spare, 16 Gianna Spiro, 9 Raul Rodriguez Authentic attired "Alma Tica Fold-Dance Group", directed by Mr. Eduardo A. Valverde, M. Ed. perform Costa Rican folk-dance at street level on both sides of the float.
